James A. Tortorella, CPA

ImageJames A. Tortorella, CPA is a Senior Vice President at Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C. (CBM) and is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. He has over 35 years of public accounting experience in the areas of accounting, taxation and business consulting specializing in a wide range of services to the automobile dealership industry. Jim is also the Director of the Automotive Services Division at Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell. In that capacity, he oversees all services rendered to automotive, truck, motorcycle and recreational vehicle dealers served by the firm and other related companies. In addition, he currently serves as a consultant to the Business Management Committee of the Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association (WANADA) as well as being their accountant and auditor. The firm also serves as the accountant and auditor for the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association (MADA).

Jim’s experience with the dealers includes valuations, mergers and acquisitions, various operational issues, tax planning, succession and estate planning and buy-sell agreements. He also provides other related services for dealers and their management, re-insurance companies, rental and leasing companies, finance companies, advertising associations, real estate, direct marketing and governmental compliance.

Jim was a founding member and President of the CPA Auto Dealer Consultants Association (CADCA), a select group of CPA firms located throughout the country who specialize in automobile dealership clientele and currently serves in excess of 2,000 dealerships nationwide. Jim also serves as Chairman of the National Alliance of Auto Dealer Advisors (NAADA), a similar organization serving over 1,500 dealers nationwide.

Jim has participated in programs sponsored by various automobile trade associations and has given presentations on taxation, accounting and operational issues. He serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation, Inc.

Jim is a graduate of Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C., with a Bachelor of Commercial Science degree. Mr. Tortorella holds a CPA Certificate from the State of Maryland, and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Maryland Association of CPAs and Greater Washington Society of CPAs.
