Cuozzo, Jr., CPA, CGFM, Senior Vice President and Director of Not-for-Profit Services with Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C. and Joseph Janela, Chief Operating Officer of the National Association of School Psychologists, will present Understanding UPMIFA and Related Accounting and Disclosure Standards at the American Society of Association Executives 2010 Finance & Business Operations Symposium. UPMIFA is the acronym for the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act. The program will be held at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, Washington, DC on May 6-7, 2010, and will include various topics on finance, insurance, human resources, and technology. (CBM), announced that three of CBM’s young accountants, Nicole Luna, Daniel Keefer, and Russell Conelley, recently passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. The Uniform CPA tests professional competence, seeking to ensure that anyone with the designation CPA has the knowledge and skills necessary to help protect the public interest. The event was held at SunTrust Bank in Washington, D.C., and was attended by more than 110 financial executives of not-for-profit organizations and practicing CPAs. Cuozzo, Jr., CPA, CGFM and Senior Vice President of Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C. recently spoke at the seminar held by the Maryland Association of Not-for-Profit Organizations entitled “Preparing for the New IRS Form 990”. As the opening speaker, Mr. Cuozzo discussed the “Core” part of the new form, also covering key portions such as the Checklist of Required Schedules, IRS Filings and Compliance, Governance, Management and Disclosure, and Compensation of Officers, Directors, and Key Employees. Over 80 partipants from 501(c)(3) and (c)(6) organization from around the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia attended. Read More March 2009 Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C, (CBM) and twelve other Montgomery County, Maryland businesses, recently provided scholarships to the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County Foundation (CBN Foundation). The CBN Foundation sponsors an anonymous essay contest for eighth grade students planning to attend Catholic High Schools, and this year, awards were given to ten students totaling more than $17,000. The recipient selected for the $1,500 CBM scholarship was Sean McGovern, an 8th grade student at John the Evangelist School in Silver Spring. President of the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County (CBN-MC) Mike Miller presented the students’ awards at a luncheon on March 10, 2009. Cuozzo, Jr., CPA, CGFM and Senior Vice President of Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C. recently spoke at the Finance and Business Operations Symposium of the American Society of Association Executives in Baltimore regarding the current IRS Form 990. Emphasis was on reporting issues with executive compensation, allocation of expenses, lobbying expenditures, and unrelated business income tax issues. Paula joined the staff of Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell in December, 2003 and works primarily with the firm’s tax, accounting, and business valuation departments. Paula volunteers for the American Society of Women Accountants and served as the President in 2007. She was recently nominated for Regional Director and will begin duties on July 1, 2008.
