Emily Norman, one of Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell’s newest team members, hails from Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Given the proximity of the ocean, the outdoors is where Emily often likes to be, especially when she’s taking long walks and listening to her favorite podcasts. Ever since she was young, she has also enjoyed getting involved in her community and helping wherever she can make a meaningful contribution. Having recently left her career in the public school system, where she was able to affect the lives of children, she was looking for new ways to give back to her own community.
But over this past summer, as inflation began driving up prices of household staples, many families realized they could no longer afford keeping pets and sent them to local animal shelters and rescues. Emily first found out about this through social media alerts
Family members were also spending less time at home because, as the COVID-19 pandemic faded, they had freedom to get out of the house. As a result, droves of people began bringing dogs and cats to the shelters. In turn, the shelters reached out to the community suggesting that people adopt or foster at pet. And for those that could not go that far, the rescues and shelters also asked for volunteers willing to walk dogs to provide them with some socialization.
Emily has always loved animals and seeing the posts on social media tugged at her heart strings. She reached out to the Wicomico County Humane Society to see if she could help by walking some of their dogs, bringing fellow co-worker Amanda McWilliams with her. After spending a few hours with the dogs, she took to her own social media accounts with a picture of her with an adorable dog named Crockett; she encouraged others in the community to take the time to go to the humane society and help as well. Many people have aversions to some dogs at the Wicomico County Humane Society, and Emily wanted to show her friends that if she could walk a 65lb dog, they could too!
Emily hopes to continue to volunteer with the Wicomico County Humane Society by walking dogs as her work schedule allows. She is also planning to see if she can arrange some extra supplies be delivered to the animals around the winter holiday season. Emily would love to continue taking on new volunteer roles to support other animal shelters or rescues as they express the need.
